Increase Traffic While Building An Online Community

by Josh Auriemma on May 24, 2009

young-man-thumbs-upI strongly encourage you all to read my new mission statement.  It’s been difficult for me to figure out my niche for this blog.  I’ve had to consider how to increase traffic to the blog while using white hat SEO (search engine optimization) and SEM (search engine marketing) techniques.  Social media websites like Digg, Reddit, and StumbleUpon are fine and dandy for short-term blog traffic, but my goal here is to build an online community of thinkers: that is, people with interesting ideas from all subject areas.

Sure, there are SEO services and SEM services that I could use to accomplish the same goals, but I think it will be an interesting ride for an outsider to watch a website go from no users, to a full-blown community.  It’s half an experiment in community building, and half an educational experience (for both of us).

Full Disclosure

As of this second, this blog is indexed via Google.  Almost the entirety of my traffic comes from Google for semi-random searches right now, and I only had 30 hits last week.

web-stats

I will scour the web on a daily basis, studying techniques for increasing blog hits from the greats (Problogger, Chris Brogan, etc.) and I will report to you their suggestions via blog post what they recommended, why they recommended it, and how I implemented the suggestion on this website.

At the end of the week, I’ll give you a report of my traffic, and hopefully an assessment of how different marketing strategies worked, and how I’ll tweak them for improvement in the future.

My “first” post will be up tomorrow and it will focus on a suggestion by Stephan Spencer for optimizing search results.  I hope that you’ll subscribe to the RSS Feed and participate in my community as the site expands.
