Using Google Keyword Tool for Keyword Optimization

by Josh Auriemma on May 26, 2009

keyword-live-traffic-reportMany bloggers write their posts without considering keyword selection.  This is another technique that should be obvious if you just step back to think about it.  If I want to increase traffic from Google about Google Adwords, for instance, I might want to know whether I should say Google adwords increases internet traffic or Google’s adwords program will improve web traffic.  Why?  Because more people are going to be googling for one of those phrases or sub-phrases more than the other.  If it doesn’t affect the post content at all, clearly I benefit more from using the more popular phrase, right?

If only there were some way to figure out whether one search phrase is hotter than another.  Thanks to Google Adwords Keyword Tool, you can do exactly that.  It’s no coincidence that the previous sentence contained the keyword, “search phrase” rather than “search phrases” for instance.  I wrote the sentence that way because I pre-determined that I wanted to strenghten my keywords regarding search phrases, and I checked the Google Keyword Tool to see which phrasing was more popular.

As you may know, it matters to Google whether someone searches for a singular or a plural, and in this case, mentioning the singular version is more than 4x more effective.

Another tip from Matt Cutts, webspam engineer at Google: it helps to load your keywords early-on rather than later into the post.  Just don’t go overboard or you’ll come across as a spammer.
